FUNCTIONAL DIAGNOSTIC TESTING

Understanding the inner workings of your body and determining the root cause of your chief concerns provides the ability to create the most effective individualized treatment plan and clear route to achieving optimal health.

Following the comprehensive health assessment, obtaining objective data through functional diagnostic testing may be recommended to clearly identify the underlying causes of your symptoms or potential health conditions that can be preventatively treated to achieve and maintain optimal health.

Whether it is to develop an “owner’s manual” unique to your body through gaining an understanding of genetic predispositions or metabolic pathways, or to identify root causes of disease, to obtain an overview of nutrient and hormone levels, or to identify food sensitivities, these tests provide greater insight than conventional routine blood tests, and are typically not offered by conventional medical services.

Dr. Cristina Allen, ND provides these functional tests:

DRIED URINE TESTING FOR COMPREHENSIVE HORMONES

The interactions between hormones must be balanced to maintain optimal health. Hormone panels can provide an objective overview of the relative elevations and/or deficiencies that are contributing to symptoms.

DUTCH testing is an extensive assessment of sex and adrenal hormones and their metabolites (building blocks and breakdown products).

While the most universally accepted testing method for hormones is through serum (blood), adrenal and sex hormones are more sensitively assessed through urine and provides a fuller picture for more precise clinical diagnosis of hormonal imbalances and hormone replacement therapy monitoring.

These assessments not only measure hormones, but can indicate imbalances in building blocks, issues with liver metabolism, genetic predispositions, and nutrient and enzyme deficiencies that may be contributing to hormonal imbalances.

COMMON SYMPTOMS THAT WOULD WARRANT DUTCH TESTING INCLUDE:
Chronic fatigue, cognitive decline, hot flashes, infertility, mood swings, challenges with weight management, poor exercise response, reduced stress resilience, and vaginal dryness.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT WOULD WARRANT DUTCH TESTING INCLUDE:
Andropause, anxiety, depression, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, infertility, menopause, mood swings, PMS.

FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING

Undiagnosed food sensitivities can affect quality of life.

Food sensitivities are not a disease, but can significantly contribute to inflammation and can play a role in causing disease or aggravating symptoms.

Food sensitivities are an immune response engaging IgG antibodies that are reactive to particular foods. The body's response to these immune reactions can be delayed and vary in intensity. Since food is consumed throughout the day and ingredients are combined, it is often difficult to identify triggers.

Antibodies are proteins that are produced in response to a specific substance that the body recognizes as alien and acts as a threat to the body. IgG antibodies are the most common type of antibodies found in blood circulation, representing approximately 75% of serum antibodies in humans.

IgG antibodies bind to food antigens to create food antibody-antigen complexes. These complexes are typically removed by the immune system and do not impact our health. However, if these complexes are present in large quantities and the food trigger is still being consumed, the immune system cannot clear them quickly enough and this results in accumulation of the food antigen-antibody complexes and can be deposited in body tissues.

Once in the tissues, these complexes can cause inflammation, which may result in a wide variety of symptoms.

IgG Food Sensitivity Testing looks specifically at these IgG reactions to identify food triggers and allow you to develop an individualized diet to optimize your health.

COMMON SYMPTOMS THAT WOULD WARRANT FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING INCLUDE:
Systemic:
fever, fatigue, chills, weakness, puffiness
Skin: itching, redness, swelling, rashes
Brain: mood and memory disturbances, behavioural problems
Lungs: chronic cough, bronchitis and asthma symptoms
Musculoskeletal: joint pain, muscle stiffness, swelling
Digestive tract: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, gas, bloating

GI-MAP (MICROBIAL ASSAY PLUS)

Research overwhelmingly indicates that gut health impacts overall health. In particular, the gut biome, plays a critical role. It mediates the effects of diet and digestive health, immunity, metabolic and neuroendocrine functions. Essentially, it impacts all pillars of our health.

The GI-MAP is a unique field of comprehensive stool testing that detects pathogens including parasites, bacteria, fungi, and opportunistic/overgrowth microbes.

This quantitative microbiome information provides valuable clinical insight that allows for creation of personalized treatment plans and may be central to cases where patients feel stuck in their healing work.

COMMON SYMPTOMS THAT WOULD WARRANT DUTCH TESTING INCLUDE:
Abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, infertility, reflux, difficult weight management, and vomiting.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT WOULD WARRANT DUTCH TESTING INCLUDE:
Asthma, anxiety, Crohn’s disease, depression, eczema, food poisoning, gastric cancer, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), ulcers, ulcerative colitis, ankylosing spondylitis, reactive and rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroiditis.

ORGANIC ACID TEST (OAT)

The Organic Acids Test (OAT) offers a comprehensive metabolic snapshot of your health, providing evaluation of intestinal microorganisms, vitamin and mineral levels, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter levels, and oxalates.

Organic acids are chemical compounds that are products of metabolism and are excreted in the urine. Metabolism is the sum of chemical reactions in living beings by which the body builds new molecules and breaks down molecules to eliminate waste products and produce energy.

Assessing organic acids allows detecting unique abnormalities in metabolism, and allows for treatments to be individualized.

COMMON SYMPTOMS THAT WOULD WARRANT DUTCH TESTING INCLUDE:
Attention issues, bloating, changes in mood, constipation, diarrhea, difficulty focusing, chronic fatigue, memory decline, and difficulty sleeping.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT WOULD WARRANT DUTCH TESTING INCLUDE:
Alzheimer’s, anti-aging, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, candida, cognitive decline, depression, and Parkinson’s.
